Artist Bio:
Born in Yichang, Hubei, China, and currently based in New York and Providence, USA, Zhu Gaocanyue is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans photography, printmaking, installation, and artist books.
Viewing images as a visual vocabulary, Zhu employs the language of photography to uncover the hidden—penetrating appearances to explore the layered relationships between humans and objects, history and reality. Recent research focuses on the shifting definitions of value, investigating the connections between humans and objects that have lost their function, obsolete knowledge systems, and marginalized forms of labor.
In 2025, Zhu earned a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He has received full fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) residency programs. His work has been exhibited in China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Italy, and has been featured on platforms and publications including PhMuseum, LensCulture, and The New York Times.
